Sydney woman awakes briefly from induced coma after Coogee Beach shark attack
Leah Stewart, a 34‑year‑old teacher, was attacked by a shark on Saturday 13 June while swimming near Sydney’s Coogee Beach. The incident left her with multiple bites on her arms and legs, severe blood loss and a limb that required amputation. She was rushed to hospital in a critical state and underwent several surgeries before doctors induced a coma to manage her severe injuries.
On Tuesday, Stewart’s brother, Joshua Stewart, posted on social media that medical staff had lowered her sedation to allow her to wake briefly from the induced coma. He shared a video of her stirring, smiling and saying “I love you” to her mother and partner on her bedside. The family described the moment as healthier than any expectation and a “miracle” that could influence her long‑term recovery.
Despite this positive sign, Stewart remains in the intensive care unit. She has already undergone five surgeries over the past week, and additional procedures are scheduled in the coming weeks as part of her rehabilitation plan. Her doctors report she has a long road ahead and that her condition remains critical.
The incident occurs amid a broader wave of shark attacks across Australia this year. In January alone, four attacks happened within 48 hours, including a fatal bite to a young boy at a Sydney beach. Earlier this month, two fatal incidents were reported: one man died after a spearfishing encounter in Queensland and father‑of‑two Steven Mattaboni was fatally bitten by a 4‑metre shark in Western Australia.
The Australian government and local health departments have issued new guidelines urging beachgoers to remain vigilant, especially during feeding seasons and in areas with higher shark activity. Independent marine biologists underscore the importance of monitoring water conditions and implementing early-warning systems to mitigate future risks.
Leah Stewart’s case illustrates both the severe risks associated with near‑shore shark encounters and the resilience of medical teams working to stabilize patients in critical condition. While her final outcome is yet uncertain, her brief awakening has offered a glimmer of hope to her family and the wider Sydney community.
