British actress Emaa Hussen, aged 34, was held in a Sydney court following charges of attempting to import 320 kg of methamphetamine into Australia. The alleged operation involved shipping containers from Ghana that were marked as bags of charcoal, a method chosen to conceal the drug’s presence.
Law enforcement officials say Hussen worked with two men from South Australia, who facilitated the transport of the containers and supervised the removal of the contents at a storage facility in Girraween, Sydney. Police seized a number of bags, electronic devices, and a notebook during the arrest.
Detective Acting Superintendent Trevor Robinson of the Australian Federal Police stated that the seizure of these drugs, with an estimated street value of $296 million, prevented what police estimate could have been 3.2 million deals from reaching Australian streets.
While Australian officials praised the operation, the case also raises questions about cross-border drug trafficking and the measures taken by different jurisdictions to prevent such illicit activities. In addition, the Australian Border Force highlighted the skill of officers in identifying disguised cargo that mimics legitimate goods.
Hussen’s career has spanned television and film; she is best known for playing Naz in the Eastenders spin‑off E20 and for a supporting role in the 2013 action thriller Hummingbird, released in the US as Redemption. She is currently awaiting a further court appearance scheduled for August and faces the maximum penalty of life imprisonment under Australian law.
