Four people have died after a six-storey building which was being refurbished partially collapsed in the centre of the Spanish capital, Madrid.

The city's mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, stated that the bodies of the last two individuals reported missing were recovered on Wednesday morning—approximately 15 hours after several floors of the building on Hileras Street collapsed.

According to local media sources, the casualties included a 30-year-old Spanish woman who was managing the renovation and three male workers from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, aged between 30 and 50. In total, three other individuals were injured.

The property, previously an office building, was undergoing transformation into a hotel. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the causes of the collapse.

Spanish emergency services deployed multiple teams equipped with drones and sniffer dogs to search for missing persons following the collapse that occurred on Tuesday.

“All our love and support go to their families, friends, and colleagues in this very difficult time,” Martinez-Almeida expressed in a post on X.

One construction worker reported seeing a large cloud of dust as he pumped concrete into the building, prompting him to flee the scene. Notably, while the interior experienced significant damage, the building's façade remained structurally intact.

Rehbilita, the developer responsible for the project, described the renovation as 'comprehensive' aimed at converting the building into a four-star hotel.
