Donald Trump has defended his special envoy Steve Witkoff as doing the standard thing after a leaked recording appeared to show him advising a Russian official on how to appeal to the U.S. president. Trump told reporters on Wednesday that he had not heard the audio but insisted that Witkoff was simply doing what a dealmaker does to sell a U.S.-authored peace plan to both Russia and Ukraine.

The leaked call from last month emerged days after the introduction of a 28-point draft peace plan by the U.S., which largely mirrored Russian interests in resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine. Witkoff, who has made several trips to Moscow this year, is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week.

Interestingly, Witkoff has yet to visit Kyiv in his capacity as special envoy, though other U.S. officials, including the Army Secretary, have made the journey recently. Trump has indicated he will continue talks with Ukrainian representatives to refine the plan.

Diplomatic conversations are ongoing as the draft plan has faced backlash from Ukrainian and European leaders for being excessively lenient towards Russia, including proposals to concede territories in eastern Ukraine.

The plan has since been modified to better represent Ukrainian interests and European allies' perspectives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed a willingness to discuss remaining sensitive points with Trump.

The leaked recording, published by Bloomberg, purportedly captures Witkoff advising Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign policy aide, on ways to impress Trump, suggesting that it is beneficial for Russia to convey respect for Trump's role as a peacemaker. In the recorded conversation, Witkoff emphasized clear communication and a potential call between the two leaders.

Ushakov commented to Russian media that the leak was likely released to undermine negotiations, while Witkoff's upcoming visit to Moscow is expected to go forward as planned. The recording raises broader questions about the delicate interplay between diplomatic strategy and transparency in international relations.
