US alt‑pop artist Oliver Tree dies after helicopter crash over Brazil
Singer, YouTube personality and record‑breaking engineer Oliver Tree (born Oliver Tree Nickell) was among six people killed when the helicopter he was travelling in collided with another aircraft over Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, 9 June. The wreckage fell into a dealership car park, igniting a blaze that set 20 cars ablaze.
Accident circumstances
The crash occurred approximately 09:00 local time (12:00 GMT) in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes area, a popular beach-side suburb. Video footage from Brazilian media shows one of the helicopters plummeting, flames erupting, and thick smoke billowing over the deck. The Brazilian Military Fire Department responded promptly after being notified of the incident.
An investigation has been launched by the Federal Police of Brazil to determine the collision’s cause, with investigators examining flight data recorders and flight plans. The crash involved two helicopter manifests: the deceased aircraft carried Oliver Tree, Argentine content creator Gaspar Prim Diaz (Gaspi), Lucas Brito Chaves, Lucas Vignale, and pilot Alexandre Souza; the other aircraft listed only pilot Charles Marsillac. The bodies of all six passengers and crew have been recovered.
International reactions
The Spanish YouTuber KSI, who co‑wrote the song “Voices” with Tree, posted a tearful tribute on X, urging the world to remember the 32‑year‑old who “should still be here” and expressing personal grief. UK comedian and “Britain’s Got Talent” judge Steve‑O also paid tribute, posting a photograph of the two together and noting how considerate Tree had been over their friendship. Fellow musicians described Tree as “a legend who will always be a legend”, citing his distinctive style and relentless creativity.
Career highlights
Tree first rose to fame on social media in 2016, using viral videos to garner a cult following. His unique look—characterised by a bowl cut and colourful clothing—coupled with hits such as “Life Goes On”, “Miss You” and “Alien Boy” cemented his place in alternative pop. In 2024 the track “Miss You” earned a Brit‑Award nomination alongside German producer Robin Schulz. In 2020 he broke a Guinness World Record by building the world’s largest kick scooter, measuring 4.16 m tall and 3.13 m long.
Impact on touring industry
The incident has highlighted the risks of air travel for touring musicians, especially when multiple aircraft are used in tight schedules. Industry commentators urge enhanced safety protocols and real‑time coordination between aerial and ground support crews during tours. Meanwhile, fans worldwide mourn the loss of a charismatic performer whose music touched many lives.
