A Utah mother who published a children's book about grief after the sudden death of her husband has been found guilty of his murder.
A jury determined that Kouri Richins killed her husband in March 2022 by poisoning him with a fentanyl-laced drink. The jury deliberated the case for approximately three hours before delivering their verdict on Monday.
During the trial, it was revealed that Richins, 35, had accrued millions of dollars in debt, taken out life insurance policies on her husband, and was engaged in an extramarital affair.
Prosecutors presented testimonies from over 40 witnesses, including a woman who admitted to selling the drugs used to kill Eric Richins.
Her defense team opted against calling any witnesses, ending their case without having Richins testify in her own defense. She was also found guilty of fraudulently claiming insurance benefits following her husband's death at their home near the ski resort town of Park City.
Prosecutors argued that Richins had falsely believed she would inherit her husband's estate, valued at over $4 million. Additionally, they suggested that she had plans for a future with another man she had been seeing.
Authorities testified that Richins had previously poisoned her husband's sandwich in an incident that nearly resulted in his death, leading to her charge of attempted murder for that event as well.
Richins maintained her innocence throughout the trial, with aggravated murder charges carrying a possible sentence of 25 years to life imprisonment.
Summit County prosecutor Brad Bloodworth stated, She wanted to leave Eric Richins but did not want to leave his money. Richins was arrested in March 2023, just two months after publishing her book Are You With Me?, which she claimed was intended to assist families, including her three children, in coping with loss.
In prior remarks, she dedicated the book to her husband, calling him my amazing husband and a wonderful father. She is now facing severe legal consequences for her actions.
