MADISON, Wis. — Democrats in Wisconsin are strategically targeting a Supreme Court election with significant implications for abortion rights, redistricting, and other key issues as they seek to enhance their liberal control of the state’s judiciary. The race features Chris Taylor, a Democratic-backed former state lawmaker, and Maria Lazar, a candidate supported by Republicans, both vying for a seat that could secure a 5-2 liberal majority on the court.
This election serves as a pivotal moment ahead of the November elections, where Democrats hope to retain the governorship and flip the state Legislature from Republican control. A win for Taylor would fortify the liberal majority established in 2023, following years of conservative dominance that promulgated several contested laws.
Historically significant, the turnout and financial backing this year is markedly lower than in previous Supreme Court elections where national figures, including President Trump and billionaires like Elon Musk, significantly influenced campaign funding. However, the stakes remain high, as the Supreme Court is poised to play a critical role in upcoming decisions about redistricting and abortion access, reflecting broader national debates.
In their campaign, Taylor has prominently focused her messaging on abortion rights, framing them as a central issue at stake this election. Conversely, Lazar has criticized Taylor's approach, branding her as an extreme partisan. Their pointed exchanges in campaign debates hint at the fierce ideological divisions that underscore the race.
Despite this intense political landscape, Taylor's fundraising advantage poses a significant challenge for Lazar, as Taylor has spent approximately nine times more on advertising. This disparity in campaign resources could shape voter perceptions and turnout in favor of the Democratic candidate.
As the race unfolds, the liberal-controlled court's recent actions—overturning restrictive laws on absentee ballot drop boxes and striking down a ban on abortion—heighten every electoral decision's stakes, especially in a politically polarized state like Wisconsin. The Supreme Court’s future will risk being a battleground for ideologies as the court approaches critical junctures in its decisions, notably with another conservative justice retirement looming in the next year.
