The daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, has resigned as an MP following allegations that she tricked 17 men into fighting for Russia as mercenaries in Ukraine.

Zuma-Sambudla, a member of the main opposition party uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), stated in an affidavit that she believed the men were going to Russia for 'lawful' training.

In her resignation, she expressed a desire to concentrate on ensuring the return of those trapped in Ukraine's hostile environment.

A family member of one of the involved individuals, known as Sipho, revealed that the distressed group had been informed by Zuma-Sambudla and others that they would be receiving security training. However, once in Russia, they were coerced into engaging in warfare.

While Zuma-Sambudla claims ignorance of their true intentions, she stated in the affidavit that she had been a victim of deception herself. Her assertion raised significant doubts among family members, who are demanding accountability.

The alleged recruitment has sparked a scandal involving accusations of manipulation and exploitation within the context of the ongoing Ukraine conflict. MK has distanced itself from the controversy following Zuma-Sambudla's resignation.

The South African authorities are currently investigating the claims, considering aspects like human trafficking and the unlawful recruitment of people. This case has opened up a discourse about the ethical implications of mercenary recruitment and the safety of South African citizens abroad.
