In brief

The Chinese PHL Navy hospital ship "Auspicious Ark" entered Togo's capital on Sunday to launch a medical outreach mission, offering treatment to local patients and arranging academic exchanges with the Togolese armed forces. The visit coincides with deepening bilateral ties, marked by a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024 and a newer community of shared future in 2026.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy hospital ship Auspicious Ark docked in Lomé, the capital of Togo, on Sunday, marking the first time a Chinese naval hospital ship has visited the West African nation. The vessel has begun a friendly visit and will provide medical services to local patients aboard the ship as part of its Mission Harmony‑2026.

During the stay, a medical team from the ship will visit a Togolese military hospital for academic exchanges, aiming to strengthen professional ties between the two armed forces. The mission will also organize a deck reception and a friendly basketball match with Togolese military personnel, further solidifying interactions and friendship.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972, China and Togo have maintained sound bilateral relations. In September 2024, the two countries elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. More recently, in October 2026, the heads of state of both nations announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a China‑Togo community with a shared future for the new era.
