Norwegian Princess's Son Arrested on Rape Charges Amid Ongoing Investigations
Marius Borg Høiby, the stepson of Norway's Crown Prince, faces serious allegations of sexual assault and other offenses, raising concerns about royalty and accountability.
Marius Borg Høiby, the 27-year-old son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been arrested on suspicion of rape, according to Norwegian police. Høiby, who is the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, does not hold a royal title nor participate in formal royal duties. The allegations come on the heels of prior charges related to violence in ongoing investigations, leading to serious scrutiny into his actions.
The allegations suggest that he engaged in sexual intercourse with an individual deemed "unable to resist" at the time of the act. Høiby has reportedly denied the claims, asserting his innocence as he faces multiple charges from incidents involving four victims. Authorities indicated that the latest rape allegation pertains to a non-intercourse sexual act involving someone who could not be said to have consented.
Høiby was apprehended late Monday night while in a vehicle with a different alleged victim from an unrelated incident, prompting broader scrutiny into his behavior, both in public and within intimate relationships. Earlier in the month, he had been charged with violence and causing criminal damage, with police noting that subsequent charges now also include allegations of "maltreatment" within close relationships and violation of a restraining order pertaining to the same victim.
The investigation has led to the search of Høiby's residence at Skaugum, the official home of the Crown Prince and his family. Høiby has previously faced accusations of abusive behavior against ex-girlfriends and threatening another individual, which had already raised discussions on the responsibilities and accountability of members within the royal family. The Norwegian palace has thus far refrained from comment on Høiby's latest legal troubles, as the unfolding events continue to capture public interest and concern regarding the intersection of royalty and legal accountability.
