PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron prides himself on his ability to reach U.S. President Donald Trump at any time. At the recently concluded U.N. General Assembly in New York, he demonstrated this capability.

While trying to cross a street in New York on Monday night, Macron was stopped by police, who informed him that the road was temporarily closed for a VIP motorcade. In response, he took out his phone and called Trump.

“How are you?” Macron opened the conversation, humorously adding, “Guess what? I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you!” This anecdote was confirmed by a French official who was present during the call.

Macron explained his situation to the police, stating he was heading to France’s diplomatic mission after delivering a speech at the United Nations where he declared that France would formally recognize Palestinian statehood.

“I have 10 people with me,” the French leader attempted to persuade the officers, but was told, “I’m sorry President, I’m really sorry, it’s just that everything’s frozen right now.”

Despite this, Macron expertly turned the moment into a diplomatic opportunity, expressing to Trump his desire to engage in brief discussions with Qatar regarding the Gaza situation.

Eventually, after a few minutes of waiting, the street was reopened, allowing Macron to continue on his way.

This interaction underscored Macron's diplomatic style and proactive efforts in engaging with international leaders, particularly around significant topics like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the lessening humanitarian situations affecting Gaza.

France's recognition of Palestinian statehood came at a time when international dialogues aim to revitalize discussions surrounding a two-state solution.
