Namibia has launched a significant response to a wildfire devastating Etosha National Park by deploying helicopters and hundreds of soldiers. The fire, which is believed to have originated from charcoal production near the park, has taken a toll, affecting wildlife and habitats.

As of now, the blaze has destroyed a substantial portion of the park, killing at least nine antelope and negatively impacting local ecosystems. Etosha National Park, covering 22,935 square kilometers, is a crucial area for biodiversity, attracting nearly 200,000 visitors annually.

Opposition MP Likando Rodrick has criticized the government's inability to manage the fire effectively, calling for better preparedness in future instances. The Prime Minister announced an emergency response, adding 500 troops to assist ongoing firefighting efforts.

Wildfires are not uncommon in arid savannahs, and while some can be beneficial for ecological maintenance, experts emphasize that they require careful management to avoid catastrophic outcomes.
