MrBeast Faces Backlash Over Dangerous Stunt Video
MrBeast, the world's leading YouTuber, has defended his latest stunt video, Would You Risk Dying for $500,000 (£372,000), showcasing a professional stuntman escaping a blazing structure while securing bags of cash. The high-octane spectacle has drawn ire, with critics claiming it could inspire reckless behavior among viewers.
Addressing the criticism, MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, stated, I take safety more serious than you could ever imagine. With a following of over 440 million subscribers, he is recognized as YouTube's highest-earning creator, also delving into ventures like fast food and an Amazon series named Beast Games.
The video, which debuted on Saturday, has already surpassed 45 million views and features the contestant confronting several death traps—including being shot from a cannon into flames and evading massive explosions—all set in a staged environment. While some condemned the production for its seemingly dystopian theme, others noted that the contestant likely faced minimal real danger, with assertions that it was merely a PR stunt.
In response to the backlash, MrBeast elaborated, This blew up, if you're curious obviously we had ventilation for the smoke and a kill switch to cut off the fires. We had professionals test this extensively and the guy in the video is a professional stuntman. He sought to clarify that safety protocols were meticulously planned, stating, We had a pyro team controlling the fires and multiple fire suppression methods.
The contestant, who ultimately secured $350,000 (£260,000), expressed intentions to use the prize money to support his retired parents. While MrBeast's content often walks a fine line between entertainment and ethical implications, holding vast public engagement highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the perils of digital content creation.
