Migrants Suspected in Fatal Attack on Mexican Immigration Agent
A Mexican immigration agent lost his life in an attack allegedly involving a group of migrants at a checkpoint, prompting a police investigation and conflicting reports on arrests.
A federal immigration agent in Mexico, identified as Luis Alberto Olivas García, was fatally attacked on Monday by a group of migrants at a checkpoint in the northern state of Chihuahua. The incident occurred when he requested to see the individuals' identification papers near Precos-Samalayuca, approximately 30 miles south of Ciudad Juárez, which borders El Paso, Texas. The National Migration Institute confirmed the attack and reported that the agent suffered multiple wounds consistent with a sharp weapon and injuries to the head likely caused by a rock.
Officials have provided varying accounts regarding the number of suspects apprehended. The federal authorities indicated that three individuals—two Venezuelan men and one Colombian man—were detained. However, Jorge Armendáriz, a spokesperson for the Chihuahua security ministry, stated that only two Venezuelans were in custody. As of Monday evening, no formal charges had been filed against the suspects.
Experts noted that the fatal attack on an immigration agent is unusual in Mexico, where such events are relatively rare. On the day of his death, Mr. Olivas García had just been recognized for his 30 years of dedicated service. Meanwhile, the Colombian government reported that it is investigating the situation but could not provide further comments at this time. Venezuelan authorities have yet to respond to inquiries regarding the incident.
