Czech firefighters are continuing to tackle a significant blaze that erupted after a freight train carrying benzene derailed near Hustopeče nad Bečvou, resulting in multiple tankers catching fire. The incident, which occurred on Friday approximately 50 kilometers southwest of the Polish border, has raised alarm due to the highly toxic nature of benzene, a known carcinogen. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

The train is reported to have split apart upon derailment, with flames reaching heights of 20 meters. Local officials confirmed that the fire quickly spread, affecting around 15 of the 17 benzene tankers onboard. The situation was exacerbated when a nearby electric substation caught fire, cutting power to the town of Hustopeče. Eyewitness accounts describe a massive cloud of thick black smoke visible for kilometers, prompting safety precautions for nearby residents.

Emergency services have mobilized extensively, deploying firefighters equipped with heavy foam and a specialized chemical monitoring mobile lab to control the fire and prevent further explosions. Dramatic drone footage captured the extent of the damage, showcasing several charred and smoking tankers at the scene.

Authorities are actively monitoring air quality and have advised locals to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed. According to Czech news sources, pollution levels have not exceeded safety limits, though continuous monitoring is necessary given the dangerous nature of benzene. The estimated economic impact of the incident is around 125 million Czech koruna (£4.1m).

Police have announced an investigation into the cause of the derailment, as the incident raises critical questions about rail safety and the transportation of hazardous materials. Benzene, a volatile and flammable liquid common in industrial applications, poses serious health risks. Short-term exposure can cause symptoms such as dizziness and tremors, while long-term exposure may lead to severe health complications affecting blood and the immune system.

With the emergency response ongoing, the Czech government is likely to face significant pressure to ensure safety measures are in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
