Tragic Death of 12-Year-Old Boy at Cliffs of Moher Sparks Concerns Over Safety
Inquest reveals details surrounding the accidental fall of Zhihan Zhao, a young boy who slipped at the Cliffs of Moher while on holiday.
The Cliffs of Moher, a renowned attraction on Ireland's County Clare coast, became the scene of a tragic incident when 12-year-old Zhihan Zhao fell to his death last summer. An inquest in Clare revealed that Zhihan was on holiday with his mother, Xianhong Huang, and family friends when he slipped on a puddle near the cliff's edge on July 23.
Eyewitness Marion Tourgon, who was in the vicinity with her family, described seeing the boy lose grip while attempting to stabilize himself. As she recalled, his right foot slipped into the puddle, while his left foot went airborne, leading to his fall. "He didn't shout and there was no noise," she stated, making the incident all the more harrowing.
Zhihan's mother, who lost sight of him while walking ahead on the path, expressed her anguish during the inquest and asked for clarification on the circumstances surrounding her son's fatal slip. The coroner, Isobel O'Dea, acknowledged the emotional weight of the verdict of accidental death while offering condolences to Ms. Huang and Zhihan's father, who was not present.
After the fall, emergency services initiated an extensive search that included aerial, land, and marine efforts, lasting five harrowing days before Zhihan's body was discovered by a local fisherman in waters between Doolin and the Aran Islands.
In the aftermath of the incident, O'Dea confirmed the cause of death to be multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a fall from height, specifically concluding that the boy had slipped off the cliffs unexpectedly. She also juxtaposed Zhihan's tragic incident with another fatality in May, indicating a pattern of safety concerns along the trail.
In a response to these repeated incidents, significant segments of the Cliffs of Moher trail have since been closed to prevent further tragedies, a decision made by the Clare Local Development Company following the spate of fatalities. The actions are indicative of heightened awareness and response to safety protocols at this scenic, yet perilous tourist destination.
