Syria's New President Calls for National Unity Amid Escalating Violence
In the wake of ongoing violence, Syria's interim president urges citizens to remain calm and united as clashes have led to significant casualties.
Syria is facing an unprecedented crisis as conflict between government forces and loyalists of ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad escalates. In a call to unity, interim president Ahmed al-Shara addressed the nation yesterday after a week of violent confrontations that have reportedly claimed the lives of more than 1,000 individuals, including around 700 civilians, although these figures are yet to be independently verified according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Al-Shara assured citizens of Syria's resilience, stating, “We call on Syrians to be reassured because the country has the fundamentals for survival,” in the midst of fresh reports of clashes in the Latakia and Tartus Provinces. The interim president announced the formation of a fact-finding committee aimed at investigating the violence, though it remains uncertain if he intends to address potential actions by his forces or if he is placing the blame solely on al-Assad loyalists.
The violence erupted Thursday when armed factions loyal to al-Assad ambushed government security personnel, causing a notable escalation in tensions. This marked the fiercest fighting since the Assad regime was ousted in early December last year. As a result, thousands of citizens have taken to the streets in protests against the interim government, marking the first large-scale demonstrations since the leadership change. Authorities have responded by imposing curfews and advising residents to remain indoors as security forces work to suppress the unrest.
In related developments, Israel’s energy minister announced an immediate cut of electricity supplies to the Gaza Strip, signaling wider regional implications as tensions rise in neighboring areas.
