Cold Weather Intensifies Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Babies Among Casualties
As harsh winter conditions envelop Gaza, at least five infants have succumbed to the cold, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation facing displaced families in the region.
At least five infants have died in Gaza due to extreme cold as the region grapples with the ongoing humanitarian crisis emanating from prolonged conflict. Health authorities reported that Jumaa al-Batran, a premature baby, died in intensive care after being admitted with his twin brother, Ali, who also passed away shortly after. These tragedies illustrate the increasing toll of winter on a population already affected by devastating conflict for over a year.
According to the Gaza health ministry, nearly 45,300 Palestinians have lost their lives since the war erupted on October 7, 2023. The conflict was initiated by a Gaza-based militant group's incursion into Israel, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. Children, in particular, have been deeply impacted, with reports suggesting that at least 17,492 among the dead were minors.
Gaza's humanitarian conditions have been exacerbated by widespread displacement, with around 90 percent of residents forced to evacuate their homes at least once due to ongoing bombardment. Many families are now living in makeshift camps, relying on tents and tarps for shelter, which prove inadequate against the harsh winter weather. These shelters are often in disrepair, with minimal insulation against cold winds and relentless rain.
Amidst these challenges, basic necessities are sparse. Power shortages mean little to no electricity is available, fueling a desperate need for warmth and light. Families struggle to find adequate clothing, resulting in children wearing only summer attire even as temperatures drop. Efforts to utilize makeshift heating methods have been hindered due to shortages of firewood and cooking gas.
In response to the impending cold snap, local authorities have instructed residents in makeshift camps to take extra precautions against the dropping temperatures. Recommendations include wearing warm clothing, insulating living spaces with cardboard, and ensuring proper nutrition, especially warm fluids. As winter progresses, hopes for relief are dim as forecasts predict continued rain and dropping temperatures in the coming days, underscoring the urgent need for international humanitarian aid.
