Yamandú Orsi Claims Victory in Uruguay's Presidential Election

Uruguay's newly elected president Yamandú Orsi pledges to unify the country after conservative defeat.

Yamandú Orsi's victory in Uruguay marks a return to power for the Broad Front coalition, emphasizing unity amid a politically moderate environment.

Yamandú Orsi, a former history teacher and left-wing candidate, has emerged victorious in the recent Uruguayan presidential election, defeating Álvaro Delgado of the ruling conservative coalition by more than three percentage points in the decisive run-off. This marks a significant political shift as the Broad Front coalition returns to govern after five years of conservative leadership under President Luis Lacalle Pou, who was constitutionally barred from seeking re-election.

Orsi, 57, acknowledged the support he received from his followers and called for unity among the 3.4 million Uruguayans, extending his hand to those who supported his opponent. His campaign emphasized a business-friendly approach, promising not to raise taxes that could deter investment. He intends to foster a national dialogue aimed at inclusivity, vowing to be a president for all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

Hailing from a modest background in rural Uruguay, Orsi has seen a meteoric rise in local politics, previously serving as the mayor of Canelones, where he facilitated significant business developments, including the establishment of a new Google data center. Orsi's political philosophy has been influenced by former President José Mujica, admired for his humble lifestyle.

As Uruguay's political landscape appears less polarized than other nations in the region, the outgoing president has pledged cooperation for a seamless leadership transition set for March 1 next year. Although the Broad Front secured a majority in the Senate, it fell short of achieving the same in the Chamber of Representatives.
