President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva undergoes successful surgery linked to previous fall injuries.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil is currently recovering from an emergency surgery involving the drainage of bleeding in his skull, reportedly related to a fall he experienced in October. The incident prompted hospital visits and monitoring, culminating in surgical intervention after an MRI revealed an intracranial hemorrhage.
The 79-year-old president was admitted to Hospital Sírio-Libanês in Brasília on a Monday night due to headaches before being transferred to São Paulo for the procedure, which medical officials described as “uneventful.” Lula's social media accounts confirmed that he is recuperating in the intensive care unit.
Lula suffered a fall in October while at his presidential residence, an accident that he detailed in interviews, explaining that he fell while getting off a stool. The resulting injury required stitches to address a wound on the back of his head, and a series of MRI scans followed to monitor his condition.
After the October fall, doctors recommended Lula refrain from air travel, leading him to cancel trips to Russia and Azerbaijan scheduled for subsequent conferences. Reflecting on his health in a TV interview, Lula expressed caution, noting the need for a full assessment of his condition over a 20 to 30-day recovery period.
In a report released earlier this November, Lula's medical team indicated that his condition was stable enough for him to return to regular activities, including air travel, suggesting a positive outlook following his recent health challenges.
