Police Clash with Extremist Sect in Guatemala Over Rescued Children
Tensions escalate in Guatemala as authorities resist attempts by the extremist Lev Tahor sect to reclaim 160 children allegedly subjected to abuse.
Guatemalan police are currently engaged in a tense confrontation with members of the Lev Tahor sect, who are attempting to reclaim 160 children recently rescued from a farm linked to the group. The rescue operation occurred on Friday when authorities, responding to claims of severe child abuse, raided the premises and took the children into protective custody.
Interior Minister Francisco Jimenez highlighted that the children were allegedly being subjected to abuse by members of the sect, which has a history of extremist ideologies and practices. Notably, Lev Tahor has drawn scrutiny globally for its severe stances, including advocating for child marriage and enforcing strict, oppressive rules for its followers.
Just two days following the raid, members of the sect attempted to forcibly enter a care center where the children were being held. This led to violent clashes with police as sect members, reportedly numbering around 100, sought to take back the children, igniting a scene of chaos outside the facility. Authorities successfully thwarted the attempt, ensuring the children remained under protective care.
The conflict underscores broader issues surrounding Lev Tahor, a community that previously relocated to Central America between 2014 and 2017. The group has faced investigations in multiple countries concerning serious allegations, including forced pregnancies and rape.
The Jewish Community of Guatemala distanced itself from the Lev Tahor sect, labeling it as an entity foreign to its values. The community expressed solidarity with Guatemalan authorities, emphasizing the need to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of at-risk minors involved in this case.
