WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A planned confrontation among young people erupted into a devastating mass shooting at a park in Winston-Salem on Monday morning, resulting in two fatalities and numerous injuries, according to police.
The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. at Leinbach Park, located near Jefferson Middle School. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that multiple individuals were shot, two of them fatally.
Assistant Chief Jason Swaim of the Winston-Salem police stated that the violent incident was sparked by an agreement between two juveniles to meet for a fight. During this altercation, a firearm was discharged, leading to several victims being struck by gunfire.
Investigation efforts are ongoing with authorities working to determine the roles of various individuals present at the park. Investigators are attempting to clarify who among them were suspects, victims, or witnesses to the tragic event.
Following the shooting, Swaim reassured the public regarding the safety of nearby schools, informing parents that students from Jefferson Middle School could be safely picked up at the school location.
Leinbach Park is situated in a suburban area to the northwest of downtown Winston-Salem, a city notable for its historical ties to the tobacco industry with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. being a long-standing presence in the region.
