ATLANTA (AP) — An Atlanta man, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, has been charged in connection with a series of violent attacks within hours, resulting in two women dead and another man critically injured. The events have drawn significant attention, particularly because one victim, Lauren Bullis, was identified as a Department of Homeland Security employee walking her dog when she was attacked.
Authorities noted that the first victim, a woman found near a restaurant, succumbed to her injuries shortly after being found. Approximately an hour later, a homeless man was shot while asleep outside a grocery store and remains in critical condition. Investigators indicated that these violent incidents were likely connected and may have involved random targeting.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin addressed the shocking events stating, 'These acts of pure evil have devastated our Department and my prayers are with the families of the victims.' He expressed concerns regarding Adon Abel's citizenship, which he obtained during the Biden administration in 2022, filtering into broader discussions about immigration policy and public safety.
The investigation revealed Adon Abel has a prior criminal record, which includes allegations related to sexual battery, but it remains unclear if this record influenced his eligibility for citizenship. Mullin specified that stringent measures had been taken under Trump’s administration to prevent individuals with significant criminal backgrounds from obtaining citizenship. However, the effectiveness of these policies is now questioned, especially in light of potential lapses that may have occurred regarding Adon Abel's history.
With investigators still piecing together the sequence of events, the local community grapples with fear and confusion stemming from these inexplicable attacks. Bullis' family described her as 'selfless, kind, and compassionate,' cherishing her love of family, running, reading, and travel.
