LELAND, Miss. (AP) — Law enforcement officers and community leaders are asking for the public’s help in identifying suspects linked to a mass shooting in Leland, Mississippi that tragically resulted in six deaths.
A news conference at Leland City Hall on Thursday aims to inform the public about the ongoing investigation, with representatives from local police, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI detailing their efforts to locate those involved.
Mayor John Lee emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We’re still trying to gather information on possible suspects out there.” Following last Friday night’s incident, several individuals have already been charged with capital murder, alongside numerous injuries reported among bystanders celebrating homecoming festivities.
As families mourn their losses, the emotional toll on the community remains palpable. Mayor Lee reflected on the overwhelming grief, stating, “It’s still kind of numbness at this point. Families are still grieving, and they don’t have closure right now.”
The mass shooting occurred during an annual community gathered following a high school football game, a cherished tradition in the small town where people typically come together to celebrate.
“This is not anything that’s happened anywhere close to our community ever before,” he added, emphasizing the shock and sadness felt throughout Leland.
The Leland shooting represents the deadliest incident in a series of recent shootings in Mississippi, coinciding with other homecoming celebrations at local schools and universities.
While the investigation continues, authorities suggest that the shooting may have been incited by disputes among individuals present. Eyewitness Camish Hopkins recounted the harrowing scene, where many were seen injured, stating, “It was the most horrific scene I’d ever seen.”
Community officials encourage anyone with information to come forward as they seek justice and a path towards healing for those impacted by this tragedy.
