In brief

A severe fire erupted on Saturday in the evening at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, claiming four lives and seriously injuring dozens of personnel. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies in Canadian military history. Sources suggest the blaze may have started when a gas main was struck during a live firing exercise, while high winds helped spread the flames rapidly. The Canadian Defence Ministry has ruled out terrorism and acknowledges that the full death toll is not yet confirmed. The base, serving as an important training hub for the army and air force, lies roughly 120 miles west‑north of Edmonton.

A huge fire swept through Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, killing at least four service members and seriously injuring dozens more.

Prime Minister Mark Carney called the blaze "one of the worst peace‑time tragedies on Canadian soil in the history of the military".

The fire broke out at about 16:00 local time (22:00 GMT). Early reports point to a gas main being struck during a live‑fire exercise as the possible trigger, though officials have not confirmed the exact cause.

High winds contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. Fire crews from both the military and civilian services worked throughout the night under extremely harsh conditions, risking their own safety to protect colleagues and civilians.

Canadian Defence officials maintain that the incident is not linked to terrorism and that an investigation into its origins is ongoing. The full death toll has yet to be confirmed, although the prime minister said it was at least four.

Four service members are confirmed dead, and dozens were reported "seriously wounded." The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, although families have been notified.

Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton declared a code orange emergency response and stayed on standby for 10 hours, dealing with 22 ambulances and eight aircraft. The facility said it was “completely overwhelmed” by the number of patients.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright lies in a rural area of western Alberta, about 120 miles (193 km) from Edmonton and 180 miles (290 km) from Calgary. It is one of the army’s busiest training bases and hosts the Royal Canadian Air Force’s airfield as well. The base typically accommodates more than 1,000 personnel at any time.
