Kyiv Bridge Hit Again Amid German Chief’s Visit

A Russian drone struck Kyiv’s Pivnichnyi Bridge on Sunday, marking a second consecutive day of attacks. The strike damaged the road surface, overhead trolleybus wires and a heating main, temporarily reducing hot water in the northern district.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived by train to Kyiv, tweeting support for Ukraine and pledging further aid to strengthen air defences. He framed the visit as both solidarity and a matter of Germany’s own security interests.

Earlier on Saturday, a first strike on the bridge injured two people. Meanwhile, the Pivdennyi Bridge also suffered drone hits, prompting Kyiv’s defence council to meet amid escalating attacks on critical infrastructure.

Experts warn that repeated drone attacks may force temporary closures and risk structural integrity, although the likelihood of the bridges collapsing remains low. The Russian government maintains it is responding to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy facilities, despite being the initiator of the invasion that began in 2022.
