OpenAI plans to allow a wider range of content, including erotica, on its popular chatbot ChatGPT as part of its push to treat adult users like adults, says its boss Sam Altman.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Mr. Altman stated that upcoming versions of the chatbot would function in a more human-like way—but only if you want it, not because we are usage maxxing.

This move, reminiscent of recent changes by Elon Musk's xAI, introduces sexually explicit chatbots to Grok, potentially helping OpenAI attract more paying subscribers. However, it may also heighten calls for stricter regulations regarding chatbot interactions.

Despite numerous requests for comments, OpenAI has not officially responded as the announcement follows a lawsuit from parents whose child tragically took his own life, citing insufficient safeguards within the ChatGPT platform.

Critics of this decision argue that allowing erotica raises serious questions regarding child accessibility and the effectiveness of age-gating measures. The emerging social discourse advocates for more stringent oversight from both state and federal legislatures.

Altman acknowledged past strictness in order to prioritize mental health but insists that current updates enable a safer environment for less restricted content. Yet, many remain skeptical about the practical implications of these changes, particularly concerning minors and overall user safety.

As discussions unfold in light of Altman's announcement, the industry faces mounting scrutiny regarding the ethical considerations of providing adult content through AI platforms, further complicating the landscape of personal interaction with technology.
