The attack off the Somali coast signals a worrying resurgence in piracy activities in the region. According to reports from UK maritime agencies, attackers boarded the Hellas Aphrodite after firing various weapons, including machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).
The vessel, operated by Latsco Marine Management, was carrying gasoline and had 24 crew members on board. Fortunately, all crew members have been accounted for and are safe in the ship's fortified safe room. The shipping company is coordinating with authorities for the safety and welfare of the crew.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that the vessel was attacked approximately 560 nautical miles southeast of Eyl, Somalia. According to their statement, the attackers were likely Somali pirates who have been increasingly active in the region.
The crew of the Hellas Aphrodite was en route from Sikka, India, to Durban, South Africa, when the incident occurred around 11:48 local time (08:48 GMT). In a statement, Latsco said they activated their emergency response team in light of the attack and have been in communication with relevant authorities.
Reports indicate that the resurgence of piracy in the area is troubling, as incidents have been on the rise after a decade of decline. The International Maritime Bureau noted at least seven reported incidents last year, with several fishing vessels seized within just a few months of this year.
