Annie Ramos, the wife of US Army Staff Sergeant Matthew Blank, has been released from ICE detention after being arrested just days after their wedding at a military base. On April 2, immigration agents detained Ramos, who is undocumented and was brought to the US from Honduras as a toddler. She spent five days in a detention center before her release.
Ramos was apprehended after attempting to activate her military spouse benefits and obtain a military ID at the base in Louisiana. Immigration officials referred to her as 'an illegal alien' and stated she had no legal status to be in the country. This incident prompted Blank, who has served the military for over five years, to express his relief upon her release, describing those days as the 'worst of his life.' He stated, 'I can't wait to carry my wife into our home and start our lives together.'
In statements following her release, Ramos expressed her hope to secure her residency status and continue her education in biochemistry, emphasizing her desire to live with dignity in the country she considers her home. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security maintains that Ramos entered the US illegally as a child and failed to appear for an immigration hearing.
The detention has drawn criticism from advocates and lawmakers who argue that such actions undermine the morale of military families. Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, who advocated for Ramos' release, called the situation a painful ordeal that never should have occurred. This case serves as a broader reflection on the immigration policies impacting military members and their families.
