CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A member of the West Virginia National Guard continues to show signs of hope after suffering serious injuries in a shocking daytime shooting incident that occurred just blocks from the White House. Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, has been hospitalized but recently communicated with thumbs-up gestures and wiggled his toes, indicating cognitive function, according to West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey.
Wolfe's family has urged the public to keep him in their prayers as he fights for his recovery. Tragically, his fellow soldier, 20-year-old U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, lost her life in the violent attack that occurred while they were deployed as part of a crime-fighting initiative implemented during Donald Trump's presidency.
The grim event unfolded last Wednesday as both military members were dispatched to assist local law enforcement in addressing crime in D.C. The shooting prompted state officials to express concerns over safety and security measures in Washington, D.C., with Governor Morrisey emphasizing the importance of supporting the families of those affected.
Authorities investigating the incident have identified the alleged shooter as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national. He faces charges of first-degree murder and two counts of assault. Reports indicate he was also injured during the confrontation and remains hospitalized. His court appearances have yet to be scheduled.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Trump administration swiftly enacted broader measures, halting asylum decisions and pausing visa issuances for Afghan passport holders, intensifying the conversation surrounding immigration policies. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed Trump has called for an increase in National Guard presence in the capital, although West Virginia has not been requested to send additional troops at this time.
Currently, about 2,200 National Guard members are operating in D.C., with over 300 from West Virginia initially deployed, though many have since returned home. Governor Morrisey expressed an ongoing commitment to support the troops stationed in D.C. while prioritizing the well-being of the families affected by this tragic event.
