CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police have arrested a man in connection with a stabbing incident that occurred on a commuter train in Charlotte, North Carolina. Oscar Solarzano, 33, faces several charges, including attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon, following the attack on Friday afternoon that left another individual hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

According to a police statement, Solarzano brandished a large knife during the attack and appeared intoxicated, challenging the victim to a fight. He is currently being held in correctional custody without bond. Court records reveal that Solarzano is in the U.S. illegally and has a history of deportations. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

This latest incident has raised concerns in the community, especially as it comes just months after the tragic death of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee. Zarutska was killed in a seemingly random stabbing on a commuter train, an incident that caught national attention and highlighted the difficulties faced by individuals fleeing conflict zones.

Zarutska had been living in an underground bomb shelter in Ukraine before relocating to the United States in search of safety. In relation to her death, Decarlos Brown Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder and is awaiting trial.

The recurrence of such violence in public transit systems has led to intensified discussions about safety policies and protocols aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
