Swiss voters cast a decisive vote in a referendum rejecting proposals that would have tightened the country’s neutrality stance.
More than 70% of participants said no to a new rule that would have required UN approval for any sanctions, keeping Switzerland’s ability to approach allies while preserving its neutrality envelope.
The reform had the support of the right‑wing Swiss People’s Party and the backing of Russia, but was opposed by the federal government and all other major parties.
Analysts say the result shows Switzerland is willing to support sanctions against Russia while maintaining its centuries‑old doctrine of neutrality.
