Polish fighter jets have been scrambled on its border with Ukraine, following a brutal aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, by Russian forces. The Ukrainian State Emergency Service reported that at least one person was killed and 28 others injured in the assault.

In response to the strikes, Poland's military confirmed that this was a “preventative” action to secure its airspace amidst rising tensions. The move comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky prepares for significant peace talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida.

Zelensky condemned the Russian attacks, stating that Russia does not wish to end the war and is intent on using every opportunity to inflict further suffering on Ukraine. Writing on his official Telegram channel, he revealed that nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles were directed at Kyiv targeting vital civilian and energy infrastructure.

As a result of the evidently coordinated assault, many buildings in Kyiv were seen ablaze or severely damaged. Thousands lost power due to the destruction and now face plummeting temperatures without adequate heating. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko indicated the need for urgent evacuations, including 68 residents from a retirement home in the Darnytskyi district.

Zelensky equated Moscow's lengthy discussions with its aggressive actions, asserting that true dialogue cannot occur while missiles continue to strike Ukrainian cities. He called on international allies, particularly the USA and Europe, to demonstrate unwavering strength against Russian hostility.

On Saturday, Zelensky is expected to engage in a call with EU leaders to discuss pathways toward peace. The negotiations focus on a new 20-point draft aimed at securing international military support should Russia attempt further invasions. The previous version of these talks has been criticized for being too lenient towards Russia's demands.

Trump, who expressed optimism regarding the new draft, stated he anticipated reviewing it in due course, suggesting potential for a favorable outcome if leaders collaborate efficiently.

In a tactical move, the Polish military prepared ground-based air defense systems alongside its fighter jets to fortify the airspace near its border with Ukraine. Following initial assessments, Poland concluded that no airspace violations occurred during the overnight drone attacks, as Russia reported downing several Ukrainian drones.

As the situation develops, the ongoing conflict and negotiations continue to hinge precariously on military actions and diplomatic maneuvers, all while civilian lives remain exceptionally jeopardized by the ongoing war.
