A speeding car fleeing police slammed into a crowded bar early Saturday, killing four people and injuring 11 in a historic district of Tampa, Florida, known for its nightlife and tourists.
An air patrol unit spotted the silver sedan driving recklessly on a freeway at about 12:40 a.m. after it was observed street racing in another neighborhood, according to the Tampa Police Department.
The Florida Highway Patrol attempted a PIT maneuver but was unsuccessful as the car sped towards Ybor City. Officers subsequently disengaged, and the vehicle lost control, striking patrons outside Bradley’s on 7th bar.
Three victims died at the scene, with a fourth succumbing to injuries at a hospital. As of Saturday afternoon, two individuals were in critical condition, while others reported stable conditions or minor injuries.
Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed condolences, saying, “What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy, our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those who were impacted.”
The suspect, 22-year-old Silas Sampson, was booked at the Hillsborough County Jail and faces serious charges including four counts of vehicular homicide.
With the city's mayor, Jane Castor, stating, “Our entire city feels this loss,” there are calls for reviewing police high-speed chase policies following the recent surge in fatalities associated with such pursuits. In light of a 2023 report by the U.S. Department of Justice which questioned the risks of active police chases, Tampa’s law enforcement policy may come under closer scrutiny.
As investigations continue, questions around police chase tactics and their implications for public safety remain a critical focus for local government and communities alike.
