Former National Football League (NFL) running back Doug Martin has died aged 36 while in police custody in California.
The Oakland Police Department reported that the former American football star, who spent most of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was involved in an alleged home break-in and a subsequent struggle with officers on Saturday.
While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued, the department stated, noting that Martin became unresponsive and was later declared dead at a hospital. His family confirmed his passing but stated that the cause of death is currently unconfirmed.
It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning, his family mentioned to various media outlets, while requesting privacy during this difficult time.
In a heartfelt statement, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers expressed their sadness over Martin's unexpected death. From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise, they noted.
Born in Oakland, California, Martin was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft by the Buccaneers. He impressed fans during his rookie season by rushing for 1,454 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns. Known affectionately as the Muscle Hamster, Martin's compact build belied his remarkable strength on the field.
Despite his success, Martin's career was marred by injuries and personal challenges, including a suspension in 2016 for violating the NFL's drug policy. Following this, he sought help at a drug treatment facility. He played his final NFL season with the Oakland Raiders in 2018, which have since relocated to Las Vegas.
