At least four people have been killed by a series of powerful explosions at an ammunitions depot in Burundi's largest city, Bujumbura, local residents have reported.
The blasts erupted late on Tuesday at the facility in the suburb of Musaga, attributed to an electrical fault, according to an army spokesperson.
Shrapnel and debris were propelled over 5km (three miles), with several houses in neighboring districts destroyed by the force of the explosions.
While the authorities have yet to provide an official count of casualties, family members and eyewitnesses have indicated at least four fatalities, and security sources cite a potentially higher figure.
One woman informed BBC Gahuza that a relative, detained in Mpimba Central Prison, succumbed to injuries after being hit by a bomb. Reports suggest numerous inmates at the prison adjacent to the munitions facility were injured as well.
In the northeastern neighborhood of Gisandema, an eyewitness recounted a domestic worker was killed when a bomb destroyed a house.
The authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage and have refrained from commenting further on the number of casualties.
The explosions created clouds of smoke over the city, inciting panic among the more than one million residents.
In response, President Evariste Ndayishimiye expressed his condolences and assured the public that the authorities are available to support those affected.
