Trump Secures Agreement With Putin to Release Russian Diesel

Former President Donald Trump announced a new deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin that allows Moscow to release up to 1.8 million tonnes of diesel to the world market, sparking debate over energy security and geopolitics.

Under the agreement, Russia would ship 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately, with 500,000 tonnes added in November and an additional one million tonnes thereafter. Trump said the move would bring diesel prices down quickly.

At a time when U.S. consumers face higher fuel costs, the proposal could ease the price burden for American motorists and businesses. The average U.S. diesel price currently stands at about $6.28 a gallon.

The Treasury Department moved to issue a temporary license allowing Russian diesel imports shortly after the announcement. Russia’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev welcomed the deal, noting it would benefit the worldwide market.

Political analysts warn that a sudden influx of Russian fuel could destabilise supply chains and that the deal raises questions about the U.S. stance toward Russia amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
