Two injured in stabbing attack at Edmonton Sikh temple
A man was arrested after injuring two people in a stabbing attack inside Edmonton’s Nanaksar Gurdwara on Friday morning.
The confrontation began at around 05:00 local time when the suspect entered the temple and was confronted by clerical staff. Rapid escalation led to two male worshippers being stabbed.
Police describe the victims as a 75‑year‑old and a 51‑year‑old worshipper who sustained minor injuries and are in stable condition. The suspect, aged 27, has a documented history of violent offences dating back to 2015.
He was released from a federal prison in Alberta the day before the incident and reportedly failed to report to his halfway house in Edmonton. Officers seized him after witnesses intervened.
Charges are pending and investigators are probing whether a hateful ideology motivated the attack. Meanwhile, the World Sikh Organization condemned the incident as deeply troubling and noted the desecration of a Sikh scripture during the event.
Police remain on site and the Gurdwara remains closed while the investigation continues.
City officials, including Calgary’s mayor, have called the earlier threats against gurdwaras “utterly disgusting” and urged the community to maintain vigilance against rising hate crimes.
Edmonton Police Chief Warren Driechel said: “We cannot remain silent when hate crimes threaten our peace.”
