An Iranian drone was shot down as it 'aggressively approached' an American aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday, a US military spokesman has said.

An F-35C stealth fighter jet which took off from the USS Abraham Lincoln warship shot down the drone 'in self-defense' to protect the aircraft carrier and its personnel, US Central Command spokesman Capt Tim Hawkins said.

The ship was approximately 500 miles from the Iranian coast when the drone approached it with 'unclear intent'. No US equipment was damaged and no service members were harmed.

This incident occurs amidst a US military build-up in the region, as tensions remain high between Washington and Tehran. US President Donald Trump has previously threatened military action against Iran if it does not negotiate an agreement to restrict its nuclear program. The prospect of negotiations was still on the table, as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed schedules for discussions between US and Iranian officials.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has warned that any attacks would lead to a 'regional war'. As diplomatic tensions flare, the US continues to remind Tehran of past military strikes, raising concerns over escalating conflict.

Tehran has not yet responded to the drone incident nor the US claims about harassment of US vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, reflecting the ongoing complexities in US-Iran relations.
