STAFFORD, Va. – A fatal collision on southbound Interstate 95 occurred at approximately 2:35 a.m. in Stafford County, wherein a bus that failed to decelerate for an upcoming work zone struck six vehicles, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and the hospitalization of 34 people, the Virginia State Police released on Friday.

All five deaths were occupants of vehicles hit by the bus, while three of the injured are reported as in critical condition. State police investigators are examining the circumstances that contributed to the crash.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that traffic was slowing southbound for an upcoming work zone,” police spokesperson said. “A bus failed to slow for traffic and struck six vehicles.”

The crash took place during a time when interstate traffic is typically low, yet nighttime sensitivity and the presence of a work zone present complex safety challenges. The incident underscores the importance of coordinated speed management for commercial vehicles, especially when approaching temporary traffic control installations.

Emergency services, including ambulances and fire crews, addressed the scene promptly. Hospitals in the region are treating the injured, and one victim remains in critical condition. Police continue their investigation, with a focus on driver compliance, vehicle safety protocols, and possible systemic weaknesses in work‑zone traffic control.

As authorities work through the investigation, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the necessity for stringent safety oversight on major highways, particularly amid construction activity.
