Virginia State University Shooting: Five Injured, Suspects Still at Large

Five people have been injured, one critically, in a shooting at Virginia State University (VSU) involving multiple suspects.

Police responded to the incident outside a residence hall at about 01:28 local time (05:28 GMT) on Saturday, as the university reported.

All five victims were treated for gunshot wounds. Four sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries and were discharged from a hospital, while one remains in critical condition.

According to Chesterfield County Police, more than one shooter was involved but no arrests have been made. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video and have not yet identified any of the injured as suspects.

The university temporarily lifted a campus lockdown, but a significant law‑enforcement presence remains on site. Classes for the new academic term were scheduled to begin on Monday, and campus dormitories reopened for returning students on Friday.

VSU, a historically black college with approximately 5,000 students, is located just over 20 miles south of Richmond, Virginia’s capital.

Such institutions were originally founded to provide higher education for African Americans who were otherwise excluded from most colleges.
