Artists and music fans from around the globe are rediscovering the rich 1970s sound of Zambia known as Zamrock, with contemporary stars embracing the genre to introduce it to new audiences.
As she crafted her third studio album, Sampa the Great drew inspiration from this niche musical movement that originated in her home country over half a century ago, describing Zamrock as a representation of 'new freedom' and 'boldness.'
The genre, characterized by its combination of psychedelic rock and traditional Zambian sounds, is evident in Sampa's latest single, 'Can't Hold Us,' where she confidently asserts her prowess against the backdrop of fuzzy guitars.
Recent revival efforts by popular artists such as Travis Scott, Tyler the Creator, and Yves Tumour, who have sampled musical pieces from esteemed Zamrock bands like WITCH, demonstrate the genre's potential to resonate beyond its original context. Inclusion of Zamrock songs in well-known television series, like HBO's 'Watchmen,' further emphasizes its resurgence.
Though Zamrock once thrived in the 1970s, economic decline and crises from the 1980s caused the genre to wane. Despite this, a renaissance emerged in the 2010s when collectors in the West began to uncover the genre's rich history. Labels such as Now-Again Records played a pivotal role in reissuing iconic Zamrock albums, sparking interest among vinyl enthusiasts for original records.
WITCH, a band synonymous with Zamrock, has experienced a revival, reconnecting with a broader audience that spans generations. As lead singer Jagari reflects, he is delighted to see a new interpretation of the music he helped create decades prior.
The ongoing revival points to a cultural renaissance in Zambia, where younger artists continue to experiment with Zamrock elements, merging traditional themes with contemporary music styles. Festivals dedicated to Zamrock and educational initiatives highlight its significance, fostering a deeper appreciation for its origins amidst the laughter and joy it brings to today’s audience.
Sampa believes the resurgence of Zamrock will have monumental effects on the music landscape, signaling a rich legacy poised to endure in the hearts of new fans. 'The fire has been lit,' Jagari remarks, looking forward to a new generation amplifying Zamrock's legacy.
