On Wednesday, November 4, Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com company, launched its “Semarak AI Malaysia” program at the AWS Cloud and AI Day held in Kuala Lumpur, according to Xinhua. The programme is designed to train up to 445,000 government officers and 10,000 small and medium‑enterprise firms in artificial intelligence, Xinhua reported.

In a statement released at the event, Xinhua said AWS “aims to equip government officers, students, software companies and communities with the tools and skills to develop their own artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.” The initiative is part of a broader commitment by AWS, which has pledged 29.2 billion ringgit (about 7.18 billion U.S. dollars) to Malaysia’s AI ecosystem.

Program Scope

According to Xinhua, the Semarak AI Malaysia initiative seeks to move beyond initial AI adoption by providing Malaysians with the capabilities needed to build AI solutions independently. The target of 445,000 civil servants reflects a focus on public‑sector digital transformation, while the 10,000 SME participants are intended to spur local software companies to develop solutions for domestic businesses and broaden regional competitiveness.

Government Partnership

Xinhua highlighted that the programme would be delivered through both internal AWS training modules and collaborations with local educational institutions. The collaboration aims to combine AWS technical expertise with Malaysia's academic and research communities, allowing the transfer of knowledge and training resources to a wide audience of public‑sector employees and students.

SME Engagement

The 10,000‑SME component of the programme is designed to empower smaller companies that may lack existing in‑house AI expertise. Xinhua noted that the training will cover foundational AI concepts, data management, and application development, with the goal of enabling Malaysian software firms to create AI products that can compete on a regional level.

Financial Commitment

In addition to training, AWS is investing 29.2 billion ringgit in various AI‑related initiatives within Malaysia. Xinhua emphasized that this financial commitment is intended to strengthen the country’s AI ecosystem and help local tech firms stand a better chance in the increasingly competitive Southeast Asian market.

Future Outlook

Xinhua concluded that AWS’s Semarak AI Malaysia programme is a key element of the company’s broader strategy to build local AI capacity. Through a combination of training, investment, and partnership with Malaysian stakeholders, AWS aims to accelerate the adoption of AI across government and private sectors, positioning the country to be more competitive regionally and globally.
