New owners renovating their property in the village of Erstroff, eastern France, made a shocking revelation when they uncovered the skeletal remains of 81-year-old Aloïs Iffly in their attic. The local prosecutor, Olivier Glady, confirmed on Monday that these remains belong to Iffly, who was previously reported missing in 2009. His wife lived in the house until her passing in 2020, after which the property was sold to the current owners.

The couple stumbled upon the remains while trying to identify the source of a roof leak. According to Glady, a rope was found hanging in the attic, suggesting the possibility of suicide. This haunting discovery, made on November 2, pointed to a tragic conclusion for Iffly’s family, especially considering the case went cold for the last 15 years despite numerous search efforts.

Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of death and the remains have been transported to Strasbourg for an autopsy. The outcome of these examinations may potentially resolve the mystery surrounding Iffly’s disappearance and bring closure to a case that has perplexed authorities and the local community alike for over a decade.
