Police in Auckland seized 137 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of 40 million New Zealand dollars, from a shipping container at a facility in south Auckland, Xinhua reports.
The container, which had entered the country from the Netherlands via Balboa, was investigated after staff at the facility became suspicious of several bags inside, Detective Inspector Karen Bright of the Counties Manukau Criminal Investigation Branch said.
Upon inspection, police uncovered 137 individual bricks of cocaine concealed in the bags, along with two G‑lock pistols, ammunition magazines and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition, Bright told reporters.
The discovery also included an estimate of 1.37 million doses of cocaine, according to the police statement.
Police are continuing examinations of the shipment’s route, with inquiries to determine the precise chain of custody and any further links to the narcotic smuggling network.
Xinhua’s account of the seizure details the practical steps taken by the investigation team, noting the rapid response to the staff’s observation and the subsequent evidence collection.
The Netherlands is widely recognized as a major source of international cocaine trafficking, and the route via Balboa suggests a trans‑Pacific distribution chain, a fact highlighted by the police officials involved.
Detective Inspector Bright indicated that the simultaneous presence of firearms and ammunition alongside the drug points to organized criminal activity, though she added that further evidence would be required before drawing definitive conclusions about the perpetrators.
According to the investigation, the seizure’s magnitude, encompassing both the drug quantity and the accompanying weapons, represents one of the largest cocaine recoveries recorded in New Zealand to date.
The case is being handled by the specialized unit within the Counties Manukau Criminal Investigation Branch, which has a mandate to tackle drug trafficking and associated offenses.
Police efforts emphasize adherence to established protocols for container inspections, especially when confronted with suspicious cargo that may pose a threat to public safety and law enforcement integrity.
The ongoing inquiry will likely involve coordination with customs authorities and international law‑enforcement agencies to unravel the full extent of the trafficking network implicated in this seizure.
