In brief
A report from Xinhua quoting the Wall Street Journal says that the United States and Israel are amassing ammunition and planning strikes on Iranian infrastructure, while President Donald‑Trump has not yet made a final decision but is leaning toward a significant attack. Trump may also seek a diplomatic deal and has said the military might not act before the midterms.
The United States has warned several Gulf states that they should prepare for a brief but intense military campaign against Iran following the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, Xinhua reported on 28 October 2026, citing The Wall Street Journal.
According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. forces currently stationed in the Middle East are replenishing ammunition stocks, while bombers and fighter jets are being readied for potential strikes on Iranian targets.
Israel is also reportedly drafting plans and identifying potential attack targets, the Journal said, indicating a coordinated approach between the two allies.
President Donald Trump has not finalized any decision on whether to launch such an attack, but the report says he is leaning toward a major strike aimed at Iranian infrastructure and nuclear sites.
Trump could also seek a diplomatic arrangement with Iran, the source states, and he has noted that the United States might launch another operation dubbed a "little Epic Fury," referencing an earlier spring offensive.
The president has indicated that he will not initiate an attack before the midterm elections, according to the Wall Street Journal.
