A horrific incident at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo has resulted in the death of a zoo worker following an attack by a tiger that escaped its enclosure. The victim, Uriel Nuri, aged 36 and head of the carnivores team, sustained significant injuries during what was described as a "behind-the-scenes tour" for visitors on Friday morning.
According to the zoo's statement, a tiger managed to break free from its enclosure while staff were engaged in activities intended to provide enrichment for the animals. The zoo confirmed that at no point were visitors in danger, as they remained safely behind a protective glass barrier. However, the unfortunate event has raised serious concerns regarding the zoo's safety measures.
Upon the attack, Mr. Nuri was immediately transported to the Hadassah University Hospital-Ein Kerem but succumbed to his injuries despite extensive resuscitation efforts. The hospital expressed its condolences, stating that staff were with his family in this difficult time.
The unfortunate incident has triggered a joint investigation with the Israel Police to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tiger's escape. An early report from Israeli newspaper Haaretz suggested that a possible malfunction of the cage door might have facilitated the big cat's exit into the courtyard area where Mr. Nuri was present.
The zoo expressed its deep sorrow at the loss of Mr. Nuri, highlighting the team's collective grief and sending heartfelt condolences to his family. This tragic event follows a previous incident last year at the zoo, where a crocodile had to be shot after seriously injuring a staff member.
The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, located in the southwestern part of the city, is home to a diverse array of animal species, particularly those referenced in the Bible, as well as various endangered species. As investigations continue, the focus will likely turn to evaluating safety protocols and ensuring similar incidents are prevented in the future.
