Billy Joel's Resilience Shines Through After NPH Diagnosis
The iconic singer-songwriter shares updates on his health journey and outlook following a rare brain condition diagnosis.
Billy Joel is experiencing a positive outlook two months after revealing his diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain disorder. Speaking on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, the 76-year-old five-time Grammy winner emphasized that while his condition is being addressed, he feels "good." He noted the challenges of balancing his health while managing the perception of his diagnosis, stating, "It sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling."
This diagnosis compelled Joel to cancel several planned concert dates in May as doctors indicated that his condition had worsened due to recent performances. NPH, described by the NHS as a rare condition, primarily affects those over 60 and can lead to fluid buildup in the brain, potentially impacting vision, hearing, and mobility.
In an Instagram announcement, Joel mentioned he is undergoing specialized physical therapy and is dedicated to prioritizing his health. His wife, Alexis Joel, expressed gratitude for the swift diagnosis and the family’s optimism regarding his recovery.
As a result of his health challenges, Joel has called off 17 concert performances across North America and Europe scheduled for 2025 and 2026, including anticipated shows at Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Anfield in Liverpool. Known for classics like "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man," Joel has recently enjoyed a lengthy touring career, culminating in a record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden, which ended in early 2025 after a mishap during one of his performances.
Despite these setbacks, Billy Joel's resilience and commitment to his health shine through as he navigates this difficult period in his life.
