Billy Joel Shares Positive Outlook Following NPH Diagnosis
Billy Joel expresses optimism about his health, detailing his experience with a rare brain condition on a podcast.
Billy Joel, the renowned singer-songwriter, has recently shared an optimistic update about his health following his diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain disorder he announced two months ago. During his appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, Joel, who has won five Grammy Awards, discussed the challenges he faces with balance but reassured fans that he feels "good." He elaborated, stating, "They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling."
NPH is characterized by a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and is particularly prevalent in individuals over 60 years old, as noted by the NHS. This condition can lead to difficulties with mobility, hearing, and vision. Following medical advice, Joel had to cancel a number of concert dates in May when his doctors indicated that his condition had worsened due to the demands of recent performances.
In an earlier communication via social media, Joel emphasized his commitment to improving his health through specific physical therapy tailored to his condition. His wife, Alexis Joel, expressed their gratitude for the prompt medical care provided to her husband and conveyed optimism for his recovery.
The musician is canceling performances in North America and Europe scheduled for 2025 and 2026, including notable shows at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh and Anfield in Liverpool. Joel, famed for classics like "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man," recently concluded a record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden. His last performance took place in February 2025, unexpectedly interrupted by an accident where he fell on stage after tossing a microphone stand to the audience. Shortly after, he announced a postponement of his tour due to his medical issues that necessitated physical therapy following surgery.
