Prabowo Subianto Takes Office as Indonesia’s President with Record-Breaking Cabinet

As Prabowo Subianto assumes the presidency, he announces the formation of the largest cabinet in Indonesia's recent history, indicating a fresh chapter marked by commitment to address pressing national issues.

Former military general Prabowo Subianto has officially been inaugurated as Indonesia's president, accompanied by the announcement of the country's most extensive cabinet formation in decades, consisting of 48 ministers and 58 vice-ministers. His inauguration marks a pivotal transition from the administration of Joko Widodo, who oversaw a decade of growth and development.

Prabowo, at 73 years of age and facing a background tied to controversial human rights allegations, garnered 58% of the vote in February elections, overcoming previous presidential bids. His colleague and running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, is the son of the outgoing president, highlighting a continuity aspect in leadership.

In his inaugural address, Prabowo vowed to work for all Indonesians, promising to tackle issues such as corruption and poverty. "A free nation is one in which people are liberated from fear, poverty, hunger, ignorance, oppression, and suffering," he stated passionately. His speech, lasting nearly an hour, underlined the urgency of addressing Indonesia's challenges amid a complex global environment.

The newly formed cabinet signals a commitment to maintaining key economic policies, including the reappointment of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

Prabowo's immediate plans involve a three-day retreat for his cabinet members, emphasizing team bonding and a unified understanding of his vision for the nation. The retreat will take place in a military academy in central Java, where participants will experience a collaborative environment aimed at fostering camaraderie and aligning on national priorities.
